CHICAGO (WGN) — Twenty school buildings and a vacant lot that previously included a school building are up for auction, with bids due at the end of the month.
The district is hoping to bring in up to $8 million and reduce ongoing maintenance costs by selling the properties. Most of the schools have been closed since 2013.
The solicitation for bids ends May 30. Each listed property includes a minimum bid for the building aside from one lot on the Near West Side. Dett Elementary, which used to stand on the lot on the 2300 block of West Maypole Avenue, was demolished last year after a fire.
The district said it hopes to find buyers to repurpose the old buildings, many of which have architecturally significant details but which need significant upkeep. CPS spends at least $2 million each year to maintain and secure the vacant buildings.
All of the properties have deed restrictions that do not allow them to be used as a K-12 charter or school or for the sale of liquor or tobacco products, Chalkbeat Chicago reported.
