City officials partner to expand New Orleans youth sports programming

Currently, the ward is a New Orleans Recreational Development Commission (NORDC) partner that provides youth programming at Easton and Norman playgrounds.

The expansion will transition Easton to Hardin Playground at 2500 New Orleans St. in the spring while continuing sports activities at Norman Playground in Algiers.

NORDC CEO Larry Barabino Jr. said thanks to the partnership with the 18th Ward, funding from Councilman JP Morrell and support from the District Attorney’s Office, they are turning the vision to reality.

“Hardin Playground is a vital community space in the Seventh Ward, and we’re committed to ensuring it serves the children and families who live nearby,” said Barabino.

Over the past months, NORDC officials have partnered with residents and city officials to revitalize Hardin Playground for regular community use.

“This partnership is a powerful testament to what can be achieved when we come together as a community,” said Morrell.

While met with a shortage of volunteer coaches, they have since moved forward with restructured programming and renewed energy.

“Expanding youth programming at Hardin Playground not only revitalizes a cherished neighborhood space but also highlights the incredible impact of the Council’s Recreation & Culture Fund,” said Morrell.

District Attorney Jason Williams expressed that the partnership is about more than sports, it’s about creating safe, supportive spaces where young people can “grow, thrive and be seen.”

Youth baseball at Hardin will start in May. In the fall, the youth soccer program will relocate to the new park. The flag football program and other seasonal activities are still in development.

Programming at Norman Playground will continue as usual.
