BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — May 11, 2025 — The Bloomington Police Department responded to a report of shots fired late Saturday night after a homeowner said he fired at a person in his backyard.
The incident occurred around 11:36 p.m. on May 10 in the 400 block of S Owens Drive. A 44-year-old man told police he opened fire on a person he encountered behind his residence after the individual allegedly pointed a firearm at him.
According to the complainant, he and his wife were inside their home when the woman spotted an unknown man walking through their front yard and toward the side of the house. Both homeowners retrieved firearms and exited through the front door, but initially did not see the individual. The man said he then heard a sound coming from the backyard and used a weapon-mounted light to illuminate the area.
He told investigators he saw a man lying face down near a fence on the east side of the property. When he called out, the man reportedly rose to a kneeling position and pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at him. In response, the homeowner said he fired two rounds. The suspect then jumped over the fence and fled the scene.
Responding officers searched the area but found no evidence that the suspect had been struck by gunfire. No injured persons were located, and police were unable to find anyone matching the suspect’s description.
