Rockford’s community memorializes veterans by planting thousands of flowers

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Community members gathered to plant flowers in memory of veterans and their families on Saturday.

This is the seventh year in a row that Rockford residents have planted thousands of flowers at Veterans Memorial Circle, located at the roundabout at Main and Auburn Street.

The community not only planted new flowers but also beautified the memorial by digging out weeds.

One volunteer said she enjoyed bringing the memorial to life.

“It makes you feel good to be able to do something like this, to drive through, and to say that we did that, and there’s so many groups that did this,” said Surise Transportation Assistant Manager Candi Ward. “I think it’s awesome. It’s not just an intersection, it’s a memorial.”

The group will continue to help water the flowers throughout the summer months.
