William D. Hardrick, 22, was killed when the Chevrolet Impala he was driving was hit by a Peterbilt tractor-trailer. Hardrick’s vehicle left the roadway, struck a fence and a guardrail and overturned. Hardrick was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, John W. McAdams, failed to stop and fled the scene of the crash.
Prior to striking Hardrick’s vehicle, McAdams was involved in a previous crash, in which the tractor-trailer he was operating struck a Nissan Sentra. The driver of the Nissan Sentra was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
After striking multiple vehicles, the tractor-trailer came to a stop and caught fire.
McAdams was arrested by troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division. He was charged with murder, two counts of felony leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The crash occurred on Interstate 65 near U.S. 31, about two miles north of Athens. Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are investigating the crash.
