Leaders looked at the progress Rockford has made and discussed what other communities can do to create safer neighborhoods.
Carbondale’s Mayor, Carolin Harvey, said violence is a problem that needs to be tackled across the country.
“Carbondale is not unique to gun violence, and youth gun violence. I think it’s all over,” said Harvey. “I think you guys have here in Rockford a great solution to that problem, whereas you’re reaching out to not just the youth, but to their families, to the schools, to the whole community is involved.”
Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara echoed Harvey’s message, saying his office wants to do whatever they can to help others, regardless of where they are.
“When you look at what’s taking place in Rockford, it’s not unique to Rockford, and we shouldn’t just keep that information here,” said McNamara. “What’s working here in Rockford can work in Carbondale, can work in Peoria, can work all over the state and all over the country.”
The visit included briefings and trips to different sites, including a stop at Rockford’s family peace center.
