Officers say they initiated a traffic stop on Morton Avenue, east of Newcomb Street in Porterville, just before 4 a.m.
According to police, both the driver, 35-year-old James Torres, and the passenger, 40-year-old Ernie Hernandez, were found with methamphetamine and were determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance. Officers say Torres also provided a false name – upon revealing his true identity, he was found to have a Tulare County misdemeanor warrant.
During a search of the vehicle, officers say they located two loaded firearms, one of which had an altered serial number. Officers say neither Torres nor Hernandez are allowed to have firearms as they are both convicted felons.
Torres and Hernandez were booked at the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office South County Detention Facility on numerous charges. Torres is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bail while Hernandez is being held without bail.
