Drainage issues raise concerns for St. Landry residents

ST. LANDRY PARISH, LA (KLFY) — Just 24 hours after heavy rain struck down here in St. Landry Parish, floodwaters are still backed up which raises concerns for residents.

“It should have been gone by now,” said a St. Landry resident who would like to stay anonymous.

The previous rainstorms left multiple feet of water and caused people to take refuge in their homes. Some residents today are still stuck in their homes because of drainage issues. Some St. Landry residents, like Louis Guillory, are willing to patiently wait out the the slow drainage of the water.

“Everything is kind of like stocked up with trees and branches and stuff that probably blocking the water.” Guillory said.

Many residents are becoming frustrated with the floods and would like to see change in the future.

“If I would see the efforts being done, you know, in my local area, I probably wouldn’t feel as frustrated as I do. But I can’t tell you I’ve maybe since I’ve been living here in 17, seen somebody dig out the ditches one time,” said another St. Landry Parish resident who would like to stay anonymous.

In a previous interview with Jessie Bellard, St. Landry Parish President, work on improving drainage issues across the parish has been underway. While the work is far from over, progress looks to be made soon.
