Prevost is from Chicago and is taking the name Pope Leo XIV. According to historians at the Historic New Orleans Collection, the new pope has deep familial ties to New Orleans and the Seventh Ward.
Historian Jari Honora said he started searching for French or Louisiana connections after hearing the new pope’s last name, “Prevost.”
While doing his research, Honora said he learned that Prevost’s grandparents were married at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church on Annette Street in 1887.
Honora said both grandparents lived at 1933 North Prieur Street in the Seventh Ward near Claiborne Avenue. He said the home’s site has since been overtaken by the Claiborne Overpass.
Prevost’s grandparents moved to Chicago before his mother was born.
