Tanner Vandeman, 24, of Columbus, was arrested Thursday night at Total Fitness on Middle Road in Columbus after police were called for a man filming inside the women’s bathroom.
Officers arrived just after 8 p.m. and spoke with an 8-year-old victim who said she saw someone holding a cell phone under the stall while she was showering. Gym employees said they soon found Vandeman standing inside a women’s shower stall.
Employees and bystanders reportedly stayed with Vandeman until officers arrived on scene. Police found that Vandeman had recording equipment with him and that he had been previously convicted of voyeurism.
Police said that they seized several electronic devices from Vandeman. The suspect was then arrested and booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on one count of voyeurism – a level 6 felony.
Online court records show Vandeman has previously been charged with voyeurism twice in Indiana. He was first charged in early 2024 on two counts of voyeurism in Johnson County, then again the same year on one count in Marion County. The latter case has already ended in a conviction.
After being convicted in Marion County, Vandeman served no jail time and was given one year of probation. Vandeman’s case in Johnson County has been delayed and rescheduled six times and is now scheduled to start on June 10.
