The Atherton Police Department responded at 7:40 a.m. to Middlefield Road and Prior Lane on the report of a collision involving a bicyclist and a vehicle. Emergency responders transported the injured bicyclist to an area hospital, where they were pronounced deceased.
A preliminary investigation determined that both the driver of the vehicle and the bicyclist were traveling southbound on Middlefield Road when the driver began to turn right onto Prior Lane. During the turn, the vehicle struck the bicyclist who was traveling in the bike lane, police said.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities, Atherton PD said. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors in the fatal crash.
The identity of the bicyclist was not released pending notification of next of kin.
The fatality marks the city’s first deadly traffic collision of 2025.
