A female reticulated giraffe named Rosie was first shown to the public on April 15 and has not looked back. According to the BR Zoo, she is the daughter of Reign, another female giraffe at the zoo, and has acclimated to her surroundings.
The zoo said in the coming months it plans to open its Giraffe Feeding Station, where guests will be able to buy lettuce and feed the giraffes.
In the African habitats at the zoo, Dama gazelles and scimitar-horned oryx made their debuts around the same time as the female reticulated giraffe.
Along with the new additions, there are several new animals on the way in the future.
Preparations are underway for the addition of Red River hogs, a black rhinoceros, Nubian ibex, one more zebra stallion, Sumatran tiger, and Andean bears.
The hogs are still in the process of completing their medical checkups and quarantine, officials said. They will eventually be shown in the mixed hoofstock exhibit.
The rhinoceros, Nubian ibex, and zebra stallion will make their arrival at the zoo in mid-May, with the rhino having to go through a quarantine before being seen by the public.
The Andean bears are scheduled to arrive at the zoo next week, while a female Sumatran tiger is coming in the future.
“We are thrilled to welcome these incredible animals to our zoo family,” said Jim Fleshman, director of BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. “Each arrival is part of our mission to support conservation, education, and meaningful connections between people and wildlife.”
