The plane made two stops. The first to drop off 26 puppies at Best Friends Animal Society Sanctuary in Kanab. The second stop to drop off 22 puppies at Best Friends Pet Lifesaving Center in Sugar House.
“It takes a whole team to make big transports like this happen,” said Patrick Theobald, the community programs manager with the Lifesaving Center remarked.
Before arriving at the Sugar House location, employees spent the afternoon cleaning and preparing kennels to temporarily house the 22 dogs.
“It’s all hands on deck here,” emphasized Theobald. “We have so many animals coming in, we are just desperately preparing all of the excess space that we have for the dogs.”
When a van carrying the puppies arrived at the center, workers quickly unloaded their crates and moved them into a garage space.
“[To] get their medical exams and checkups, and make sure everybody has a safe space to land,” Theobald stated. “And kind of decompress. Then we’ll start moving them out and into foster homes.”
“It’s very difficult to take in extra animals when we’re already pretty overwhelmed currently here in Utah,” Theobald added.
The puppies won’t be up for adoption until next week, so fosters are needed now.
“We provide all of the supplies,” explained Theobald. “We give all of the food, the crates, the beds, blankets, toys, and even medical care.” For those who would like to foster, more information can be found by visiting the Best Friends website.
When the puppies are ready for adoption, their adoption fees will be waived. In fact, all adoption fees are waived during the month of May thanks to a partnership with Blue Buffalo and Walmart. On May 17, the center will be holding an adoption event at the Walmart in West Jordan from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. The puppies will be at the event.
