Former CPS principal who pleaded guilty to overtime fraud scheme found dead

CHICAGO — A former Chicago Public Schools principal who pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars was found dead on the day of her sentencing.

Sarah Jackson Abedelal failed to show up for sentencing Tuesday and was found dead later that night.

Abedelal was the principal at Brennemann Elementary School, located at 4251 North Clarendon Avenue, before she was indicted in an overtime fraud scheme in 2021.

She pleaded guilty in 2022 to submitting time cards for school employees with hours they did not work, and pocketed the cash.

The charges allege that Abedelal fraudulently obtained at least $200,000 in CPS money through the scheme. Five other people were also charged.

Abedelal’s cause of death is unknown at this time.
