7th Spartan Games bring thousands together for fun, unity

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS – A record number of athletes and volunteers from across east-central Pennsylvania spent the day Tuesday participating in the 7th Annual Spartan Games.

The event is organized each year by the North Schuylkill School District.

It brings together student athletes and volunteers to break down barriers and change attitudes, the district says.

This year’s games drew a record 1,040 athletes and more than 1,000 volunteers from 21 schools across the region and spanning all grade levels, from Kindergarten to 12th Grade.

They participated in a wide variety of games, like bocce, long jump, frisbee, javelin, running, and more.

The festivities at Spartan Stadium kicked off with a torch relay followed by a mascot race, won by the Shikellamy Braves, of Sunbury.

Participating schools included Shenandoah Valley, Mahanoy Area, North Schuylkill, Mount Carmel, Southern Columbia, Shamokin, Upper Dauphin, Palmerton and more, representing Schuylkill, Northumberland, Columbia, Dauphin, and Carbon counties.
