Rockford police seize loaded handgun and cannabis from 16-year-old teen

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police responded to reports of an armed teenager near 11th Street Tuesday night and were able to catch and arrest a 16-year-old offender.

Police said officers with the Specialized Community Oriented Policing Enforcement (SCOPE) team became aware that a potentially armed teen was in the area of 11th Street and 5th Avenue around 9:50 p.m. and spotted a suspect.

The teen was carrying a loaded handgun with an extended magazine and a laser-light attachment, along with 35 grams of cannabis, police said.

He was charged with armed violence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession with intent to deliver cannabis, and no valid Firearm Owner’s Identification.

The teen was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.
