Rayne ‘friendly fire’ shooting points out dangers surrounding police officer’s job

RAYNE, La. (KLFY) — In the wake of the Rayne community dealing with the loss of Police Lt. Allen Credeur, who was accidentally killed by another officer Monday, we look into the dangers faced by those who enforce the law.

Rayne Police said during the execution of a search warrant for a suspect in a domestic violence complaint, Dustin Johnson, Credeur was accidentally shot and killed by “friendly fire.”

Sgt. Robin Green, a public information officer with the Lafayette Police Department, gives insight into the dangers police officers face on the job.

One of the biggest dangers is responding to a domestic incident in progress.

“This is extremely high risk,” Green said. “I mean, every call we go on is potentially a dangerous situation, but domestic incidents are more dangerous because you don’t know what exactly you’re walking into because you have elevated emotions that are at play at this time. Not to mention, you don’t know you’re going on somebody else’s territory. It’s their house. It’s their domain. So you don’t know if there are weapons and if there are weapons in that house or a dwelling you don’t know the location of them.”

“A lot of times for us, we don’t send one officer to a domestic incident,” Green said. “Usually, it’s a two-man unit, which means we have two officers that will respond together for a domestic incident.”

Another especially perilous situation is when officers are serving a warrant for the arrest of someone who has a lengthy criminal history.

“A lot of times we will utilize our SWAT team to execute those types of warrants,” Green said. “Even though we’re using the SWAT team, it’s still a dangerous situation because our officers have the potential of meeting a suspect with warrants and do not want to go back to jail and so by any means necessary to keep officers away, they may choose to use these weapons against our officers and it’s been done in the past where people will use guns and shoot at officers.”

News 10 has learned through a family member that the shooting in Rayne was the result of a domestic incident.

Tiffany Navarre described what possibly led up to the stabbing of her husband. She said Johnson, who was a suspect in the stabbing, is her daughter’s boyfriend and her daughter has been a victim of domestic violence.

“My daughter called her dad to go pick her up. He pulled up over there,” Navarre said. “He didn’t go over there for no trouble, he was going there to pick her up.”

She claims Johnson got into an altercation with her husband and Johnson allegedly threw hot grease on him and stabbed him in the back.

“Domestic violence is real,” Navarre said. “Listen, I know it’s hard. It’s very hard. They tell you anything you want to hear. Listen, people out there care. Tell somebody. Nobody deserves this, honestly.”

News 10 was informed her husband was sent to a local hospital and has been released.

Johnson was arrested and booked into the Acadia Parish Jail for attempted second-degree murder and violation of protective orders. His bond is set at $1 million.
