Regulations requiring houseboat registration were established on Jan. 1, 2019. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) defines houseboats as any boat constructed or used as a temporary or permanent home without effective means of propulsion.
The agency said unregistered houseboats are more likely to become derelict or abandoned, and houseboats left on waterways can pose a safety hazard for boaters. Call Operation Game Thief at 1-800-442-2511 to have an agent investigate the owners of unregistered houseboats.
LDWF has a webpage dedicated to boat registrations where houseboat owners can find and fill out the form needed to register. Pictures are needed for the registration. The agency said the titling of the houseboat isn’t required.
Applications can be dropped off at LDWF Headquarters at 2000 Quail Drive in Baton Rouge or mailed to:
LDWF
Attn: Boat Registration/Boat and Motor Title Application
PO Box 14796
Baton Rouge, LA 70898
Applicants will get a copy of the registration with HIN decals and placement instructions.
