This construction phase will introduce several key elements to the site, laying the foundation for the beach.
“That gives us the opportunity to expand the beach, to build some of the facilities like restrooms and that elevated cafe I mentioned earlier, the pedestrian bridge that will go overhead as well as parking on the land side,” Sasaki Principal Joshua Brooks said.
Phase two will complete the majority of program areas where guests will enjoy a wide variety of activities both on and off the water.
Construction of this phase is believed to be possible within the next few years if funding permits.
“Like a large children’s playground, additional circulation and access to the beach, a welcome facility and museum facility to celebrate some of the history and some of the audio histories that we actually gathered through the process,” Brooks said.
Phase three will see the construction of some more nature development as well as the final portion of the parking lot.
“Additional landscape spaces, a large picnic lawn, some nature paths that run through the woods,” Brooks said.
In total, the project is expected to cost about $40 to $50 million with phase one’s funding already secured through the city.
However, Councilman Oliver Thomas says he is confident that the city will find the remaining funds whether they’re through federal, state or local funding.
“I think we’ve consistently done that, whether its bond issues, whether its money from our congressmen, the money from our state officials, as well as the administration,” Thomas said.
