Golf carts can now zip around neighborhoods, going almost anywhere a car can in Speedway.
It’s a part of a new ordinance passed in the last year. It involves multiple steps to get your golf cart permitted through the city, but there have already been 44 golf cart permits handed out.
“It does have to have everything that a street-legal vehicle has to have,” said Grant Kleinhenz, the Speedway Town Manager. “It has to be licensed and registered, has to be insured, you have to have side mirrors, a rear-facing mirror, a slow-moving vehicle triangle facing sign.”
Speedway resident Rodney Lyden was the 22nd person to get his golf cart permit. He said the process was simple.
”I called the code enforcement department and they sent out an officer out to run through a checklist that you can print off on the Town of Speedway website,” Lyden said.
Once you get your golf cart inspected and have your application filled out, you can go get your permit.
“I took it down the the clerk’s office and presented my info to the clerk and then paid $100, because I’m a Town of Speedway resident and she gave me my permit.”
The golf carts are not allowed to drive on Crawfordsville Rd., Lynhurst Ave., 10th St., or High School Rd. The carts can only cross these roads at specific intersections.
”I wouldn’t want to drive on those streets anyway, because they’re high traffic streets and four lanes of fast-moving traffic,” Lyden said.
Golf carts are also not allowed on race days until four hours after the race is over.
”We have 350,000 people already here,” Kleinhenz said. “Throwing an extra 100, 200 golf carts onto the road and into the fray would be a little bit too much.”
His plan is to cruise around and explore more of the neighborhood this May.
”I’m just going to drive around and see my neighbors on it and just see the race fans that come into town and talk to them and just enjoy it,” Lyden said. “I’ll probably see a lot more of the town than sitting at my house or going around the corner.”
Visiting race fans are also able to get their golf carts permitted to drive around the town. Kleinhenz said they have to go through the same inspection and permitting process and there is also an added fee for non-Speedway residents.
“It’s not something you can show up on the day before the race and hope that you can drive around the town,” he said.
Kleinhenz said Speedway visitors who want to bring their golf carts should schedule an inspection and begin the permit process as soon as possible. He said their efficient with the process and may be able to get carts permitted as last as the week of the Indy 500.
Lyden said he’s already heard visitors who are curious about the process.
”I’ve seen a lot of chatter on Facebook where people are inquiring on the process of bringing their golf carts into Speedway and what they need to do as far as being legal, permitted and everything,” Lyden said. “I think we’re going to see a lot of golf carts around race time.”
With 44 permits already given out, Kleinhenz thinks that number will only increase.
”I would hazard that is a good guess,” he said. “That it will double or triple over the next month.”
Another addition to Speedway since last May is a designated outdoor refreshment area, or DORA, surrounding Main St.
Customers leaving registered DORA restaurants can take their drinks outside to enjoy them along Main St.
”We’ve had several concerts and open-air activities here where people can bring their beverages because of the DORA,” Kleinhenz said.
The DORA restaurants are O’Reilly’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, Dawson’s on Main, Barbecue and Bourbon, Foyt Wine Vault, Daredevil Brewing and Brozinni Pizzeria. You can find a map of the DORA on the Speedway website.
Kleinhenz said, so far, Speedway hasn’t had any problems with the DORA or golf carts. They’re hoping to keep it that way, especially when it comes to drinking and driving.
”That is illegal,” he said. “You will be ticketed and subjected to any DUI process that there is.”
