Police were first called to investigate
When officers arrived, they found 21-year-old Aundre Johnson shot and slumped over the steering wheel inside his own SUV at the Waterfront Pointe Apartments. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
A week later, Johnson’s family still has no idea what motivated the shooting or who’s responsible for the violence.
“I’ve never experienced a pain like losing a sibling,” said the victim’s sister Natalie Shupert. “Its been really traumatic.”
Shupert said her younger brother graduated a few years ago from Ben Davis High School and worked at the Indianapolis International Airport.
While he had a big family, Johnson didn’t have any kids and never got to raise a family of his own.
“He never got the chance to be a dad. He never got to get married. He never got the chance to make a life for himself. He never got the chance. Someone stole that from him,” said Shupert.
Johnson did not live in the complex where he was found.
Before he was killed, the 21-year-old stayed out of trouble and didn’t have a criminal history.
“That’s why this is so perplexing to us because he was never in any trouble,” said Shupert. “He was straight and narrow. He went to work and did his job. Same thing the next day. It was very routine for him.”
“We want to find who is responsible for this and we want to work with our neighbors and anybody who might have information,” said IMPD Officer Drew Brown.
IMPD said the case remains an active investigation, but police can’t solve homicides like this without the public’s help. They need the assistance of witnesses or home surveillance cameras to solve the case.
“We’re going to stay at this, but we can’t do this alone,” said Brown.
“He had kind of a child-like innocence. He was like a big kid,” said Shupert. “He was very quiet. We have no idea what’s going on.”
Shupert described her brother as a gentle soul who was shy at heart and largely kept to himself.
“We don’t know what happened. What transpired? What caused this? We don’t know,” said Shupert.
While the motive for the homicide remains a mystery, Johnson’s family just hopes someone speaks up and helps to hold his killer accountable.
“His family deserves answers. There’s a lot of grieving people right now,” said Shupert.
