Woman shot during Cinco de Mayo celebration in Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – A woman was shot during a Cinco de Mayo celebration in Vicksburg, according to police.

Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones said she was dining with friends at Superior Crab around 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 5 when the shooting occurred. The police chief said an altercation broke out in the women’s restroom and involved three women. Jones said one woman shot another female in the lower part of her body.

During the investigation, the victim informed officers that there had been an ongoing feud between her and one of the suspects. Jones said the two were involved in a physical altercation this past weekend at a local establishment.

Two females were arrested in connection to the shooting and are facing charges of aggravated assault.

“This incident saddens me deeply. It is heartbreaking to witness such a lack of respect for life, for one another, and for authority. Violence should never be the answer. No city is perfect, and crime continues to challenge communities across this nation. However, I want to assure the citizens of Vicksburg that our officers acted quickly and decisively,” said Jones.
