Swimmer disappears at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) — A victim disappeared in the ocean after jumping from a cliff near a surf spot, known as Steamer Lane, on the westside of Santa Cruz.

Witnesses reported that two swimmers were struggling to swim back to shore after they jumped off the cliff at 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Other witnesses said the swimmers were actually surfers. Surfers typically paddle out at Steamer Lane by jumping off the cliff next to the Santa Cruz Lighthouse.

Witnesses said one victim was able to eventually swim back to the beach.

“Additional reports from observers advised one subject was able to self extricate, and the other possibly submerged,” the Santa Cruz City Fire Department wrote.

A massive search-and-rescue effort was launched in the waters around Its Beach and Steamer Lane for the missing victim. The U.S. Coast Guard, California State Parks, harbor patrol, local lifeguards, and multiple fire departments were dispatched.

“Specialized search patterns were conducted in the area where the victim was last seen, along with drone operations for assistance. After over an hour of an extensive search, it was determined to conclude the search from shore. Coast Guard units remained on scene to search the area with both aircraft and a vessel,” SCCFD wrote.

Officials said the possibly submerged victim was not found.
