Surveillance video of May 2023 homicide shows 2 possible suspects following victims

INDIANAPOLIS — Darian Wiley and Olivia Brown had been out to dinner and returned to the home Wiley shared with fellow Ball State University graduates not far from King Kennedy Park on Indianapolis’ north side early on the morning of May 6, 2023.

Wiley parked his car in an alley and was walking Brown to her car out on the street.

They were being followed by two people in hoodies.

”It went from this alley right here wherever they seen them at down this street, into that field over there,” said Kevin Jones, pointing out the direction his cousin took escorting his date to the intersection of 21st and Ruckle streets.

”They said that when it happened, Darian…he fought them to free her and then she got to the car but he was already shot by that time,” said Darrel Hutchinson, recalling his son’s courage in the face of whomever was robbing him.

“He was already shot and on the ground,” said Jones. “He was in the middle of the street.”

Investigators think Brown had enough time to get to her car and start the engine, only to be shot as the vehicle rolled to a stop in a vacant lot on the corner.

“I think he was targeted,” said Hutchinson as he referred to his son’s nice car in a neighborhood that had recently experienced a wave of robberies and burglaries.

The robber or robbers got Wiley’s handgun.

Now, IMPD has it.

”The police said they had the handgun,” said Hutchinson, “and they had the suspect, they caught somebody with the gun but they’re not gonna call him a suspect but they haven’t got back with me.”

Besides the recovered handgun, the best evidence detectives have is the surveillance video that clearly shows the two people tracking the victims and then running away, said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson.

”That footage is great because it clearly shows what would possibly be suspects, what would possibly be people who had just come through the area,” Thompson said, “but it clearly gives some identifiers and those are the things we are looking for when we do our investigations.”

If you recognize the people in the surveillance video or know anything about the unsolved murders of two people on the north side two years ago, call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS to potentially claim a $1,000 reward.

When asked what Hutchinson wanted everyone to know about his son, the grieving father said “Superhero,” as his voice faltered and his stance shaken.

“(He was) my personal superhero,” he said.
