EVANS, Ga (WJBF) Cheryl Flowers teaches A.P. Pre-Calculus and Advanced Algebra at Evans High School. She understands that Math can be a daunting subject at first.

“I just try to find ways to help me understand it better,” Flowers says. “And fill in those gaps for the students. Because a lot of them have a hate for Math when they get to me. And so just trying to nurture them and build relationships, and through the relationships they want to be successful.

Ms. Flowers will tell you there’s one concept that really helps everyone understand math.

“Money. Try to relate it to towards money. How we break up money. How we spend money. How we earn money. Just using stuff that we use every day.”

Her students know that Ms. Flowers’ classroom is more than a place to learn. It’s a safe space.

“I like to build relationships with my students. If they need somebody to talk to, or they feel that they don’t have anybody, that they know they can come to me.”

And from here, the sky is the limit. Thanks to a subject made easier to understand by Cheryl Flowers.

“Just giving them a chance to know there’s multiple ways to apply math in your life,” she says. “You can be an engineer. You don’t have to be a mathematician. If you’re not even going to college, you can apply it to a technical role.”
