71-year-old man dies in collision with semi truck on I-39 near Baxter Road

CHERRY VALLEY, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office announced that a 71-year-old man was killed in a collision with a semi truck on I-39 near Baxter Road on Friday.

Officials said the man, who is from Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, was a passenger in a Kia Sorento northbound on I-39 when the car was rear-ended by a semi truck as traffic began to slow.

The victim’s car left the road and overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.

An autopsy revealed the victim died of blunt trauma to the chest due to the crash.

The crash is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
