Showers, thunderstorms moving in Sunday along with much cooler temperatures

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Sunday, Utah! A chilly, winter-like storm is set to move into the Southwest over the next day or so, bringing snow, rain, and a noticeable drop in temperatures, especially across southern Utah. The action gets underway this morning and lasts through at least Tuesday morning.

If you’ve got plans in the high country, especially above 9,000 feet in the southern Utah mountains, be ready for heavy snow and true winter conditions. Folks recreating in these areas should plan for several inches of late-season accumulation. Travel over high passes could get slick during the overnight hours, particularly Sunday into Monday and again Monday into Tuesday. A Winter Weather Advisory for the Southern Mountains will last through Tuesday morning, with 5-15″ of snow is expected.

Meanwhile, temperatures will take a sharp dive by Monday. Places like Cedar City and St. George could be running as much as 20 degrees below normal. It’s going to feel more like February than May for a bit.

Lower elevations won’t be snow-covered, but they’ll see their fair share of rain, especially in southwest Utah. Most valley spots can expect between half an inch to an inch and a half of rainfall, with some locally higher amounts in the mountains. While flooding isn’t expected, area creeks and streams could rise with any prolonged heavy rain.

By Tuesday into Wednesday, the storm system moves out, but some moisture will linger. We could still see a few spotty showers or thunderstorms across Utah’s mountains through the week. By Friday, warmer weather makes a comeback, with above-normal temps returning under a building ridge of high pressure. There is a hint of another weak system late in the week or into the weekend, which might stir up some extra showers, but nothing major is on the horizon after Wednesday.
