Her law enforcement millage renewal passed by just two votes.
The millage is used to supplement funding from the City of New Orleans for the operations, maintenance and upkeep of the Orleans Parish Jail.
It also supports public safety initiatives. It generates approximately $13.1 million per year.
Hutson issued the following statement:
Today, the people of Orleans Parish made an important decision to continue investing in public safety, accountability, and progress. I want to thank every voter, supporter, and advocate who took the time to learn the facts and understand what the Safe and Strong Communities Millage means for our community.
This renewal is more than just continued funding. It is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to building a stronger, safer, and more just Orleans Parish. With your support, we will continue advancing a sheriff’s office that is professional, accountable, and rooted in service to every resident.
We are doing the work this community has asked of us—ensuring humane treatment for those in our custody, connecting them to education, job training, and housing, and supporting the deputies who protect our neighborhoods and serve during critical times, from everyday patrols to major events like Mardi Gras.
This millage renewal is about people. It’s about our deputies who show up every day with courage and commitment. It allows us to keep improving their working conditions, strengthening operations, and giving them the tools to serve with integrity and care.
Thank you for believing in our mission. We move forward with purpose, with focus, and with you.
