Motorcyclists gear up for spring with bike blessing

CHICAGO – As temperatures warm up, motorcyclists are bringing their bikes back out.

“I get on a bike. I forget about work. I forget about everything,” Eddie Molina, chaplain of Legion of St. Michael Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, said.

Now that spring has sprung and nicer weather is upon us, Legion of St. Michael Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club members are looking forward to hitting the road again.

To gear up for the season the right way, club members hold a bike blessing, asking God to protect them while riding.

“It gives us time to get together to get started the right way,” Legion of St. Michael Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Founder Daniel Diaz said. “It’s asking the good Lord to put His hands of protection over us.”

Molina has experienced that firsthand.

“I got hit last year. A girl sideswiped me and by the Grace of God I’m okay. Here I am,” Molina recalled.

After a rough day on the job several years ago, Diaz – a now-retired Chicago police officer – started the Legion of St. Michael Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, which is comprised mostly of law enforcement officers.

In the last decade, membership has spread to 15 states along with chapters in Italy and Great Britain.

Diaz’s goal is to offer fellow men in blue an outlet.

“We’re able to get it out of our system, so it’s like a little form of therapy, wind therapy,” Diaz said.

While being there for each other, the group also supports the community during good and bad times.

“When there is a tragedy, we go and we don’t have to ask each other. You have to go,” Diaz said.

As the group hits the road in force, they’re looking forward to a safe season which everyone on the road can help with.

“Look out for us and be safe, because folks just see a motorcyclist but it’s a mother, it’s a father, it’s a brother,” Diaz said.
