BATON ROUGE, La. (
Louisiana First) – Election day is Saturday, May 3, for our area, and three Democratic candidates are running to fill the vacant District 67 House of Representatives seat, which represents part of Baton Rouge.
The candidates said they’ve campaigned extensively to earn votes, now it’s up to the people to decide.
Malcolm Myer said he has unique experience, holding numerous leadership roles at the State Capitol. He said he’s an advocate for teacher pay raises and community policing to curb crime.
“I’m the only candidate that has lived, worked, and worshipped here in District 67 for 30-plus years,” Myer mentioned.
Terry Landry Jr. also has experience working at the Capitol.
“For the past 16 years, I’ve been in the Capitol working on behalf of the people,” said Landry. “From Medicaid fraud in the Department of Insurance to Acadian ambulance, ensuring emergency services were available readily.”
Landry is an attorney who said he’s an advocate for bettering early childhood education, to keep young people out of trouble from the start. Sonny Marchbanks said he’ll advocate for the everyday working citizen.
“I’m a political outsider,” Marchbanks mentioned. “My dad worked in the oil field, my mom was a waitress, I worked in the oil field, I waited tables, and I worked through school. Now, I’m a construction project manager. I still get up every morning and go to work, and I understand the needs of the working people in the District.”
There are also several tax renewals and tax propositions on the ballot.
The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday.
