Tess Boade talks Bay FC season, facing sister on the field 

(KRON) – Now in the middle of the National Women’s Soccer League season, the second-year Bay FC is finding its stride. Midfielder Tess Boade talked with KRON4.com about the season so far and the highlights of her individual season. 

In March, scuttlebutt of a toxic work environment led to an investigation by the National Women’s Soccer League. At least two formal complaints have reportedly been filed against head coach Albertin Montoya, and a third of the roster separated from the team. 

Despite the investigation, Tess told KRON4.com, “We have a great culture, one of the best I’ve been a part of.” Tess called the current team “intentional” and said they “oozes the same enthusiasm and passion.” 

Two-time NWSL champion Kelli Hubly, collegiate All-American midfielders Hannah Bebar and Taylor Huff, and UC Berkeley standout Karlie Lema were the new additions to the Bay Area team.

The squad is currently ranked eighth overall in the NWSL (2-2-2) with a total of 8 points. 

“I think some matches, we’re putting it all together and some things kind of look a little off. But I think the general trend is up,” the Duke University alum continued. “Our goal is to try to win all of those. Get points every single game and I think that’s very doable for us.”

In the third match of the season, No. 12 and the Bay FC took on the Washington Spirit in Washington, D.C., where one of Tess’ opponents was a familiar face. Spirit midfielder Meg Boade is Tess’ younger sister. Tess called the match a “cool big sister moment.” Washington defeated the Bay (2-0). 

“After years of us training together and just getting to see her in a pro uniform was so awesome,” Tess told KRON4.com. Tess said she hopes one day she and her sister can wear matching jerseys. Washington Spirit is currently ranked as the third-highest team in the league (4-0-2) with a dozen goals.

“I think [Washington Spirit is] going to be one of the teams to watch this year,” said Tess. “I’m excited for when we play them again, especially because it will be at Oracle Park, so a memorable game.”

This match will be the first women’s professional soccer match played at Oracle Park.

The Boades are both alumni from the same high school as Christian McCaffrey, Valor Christian High School.

For the advancement of women’s sports, Tess believes great partnerships with companies, media and other endeavors can assist with growth. Invisalign is the latest partnership wth Bay FC.

On Sunday, Bay FC will take on the San Diego Wave FC at Snapdragon Stadium.
