OAKLYN, N.J. (WPHL) — A raccoon found in Oaklyn on April 27 has tested positive for rabies, according to the Camden County Health Department.

Between April 27 and April 29, the Camden County Police Department received several reports concerning raccoon activity. Police gave the health department all raccoon-related complaint calls during that time period to confirm there were no potential human or pet exposures.

“Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment,” said Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, liaison to the Camden County Health Department. “If you have been bitten or scratched by a wild animal it is important that you seek immediate medical attention.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tips for rabies prevention and control on its website at cdc.gov/rabies. Residents can also call the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services at (856) 374-6370 for more information.
