Police: Rockford man headbutted a squad car while being arrested on weapons charges
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Everett McElrath Jr. for allegedly damaging a squad car and illegally possessing a weapon.

On April 28, around 8 p.m., officers saw a Chevy Malibu in the 3400 block of Aburn Street that failed to use its turn signal. Authorities pulled the car over in the 1500 block of Evergreen Street and smelled raw cannabis when they approached the vehicle, according to court records.

Officials searched the vehicle and found a loaded gold and black pistol in the truck along with ammunition.

When police took McElrath into custody, he purposely slammed his head into the side of a squad car, court records show.

The vehicle had a head-sized dent that would cost around $500 to repair, authorities reported.

McElrath is charged with Illegal possession of ammunition without a FOID, criminal damage to government property, three counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon in a vehicle, aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle without a FOID.

He was granted pretrial release the next day in court.
