LPGA Players Reveal Their Game-Day Superstitions

Ivins, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – At the scenic Black Desert Resort, the pressure of the competition isn’t the only thing on the minds of LPGA athletes. It takes world-class talent to win on the LPGA Tour, but for some players, a little bit of luck never hurts.

Swedish pro Anna Nordqvist shared one of her quirks, “I guess I do. I’ll only play with white tees, and they have to be a certain length.”

American pro Stacy Lewis tries to keep things simple. “I try not to. I think the only thing that I usually do is I mark my ball with a quarter. No specific quarter, just a quarter. I try not to be too superstitious. It can kind of control your life a little bit,” she said.

South African pro Ashley Buhai told us she has a whole routine with her gear. “I only carry 3 tees in my pocket at a time, and the balls kind of go 1, 2, 3, 4 in terms of the rounds.” But what happens if you break a tee? “I only keep 2 in my caddy, caddie has the rest, and then the minute I’m out of the 3, I take another 3.”

English pro Georgia Hall admitted to a few personal rituals. “Yea a few. I have to touch my clubs, before I tee off, twice to make sure I have the right amount, and when I drink a drink on the course, I have to shake it to make sure nothing is coming out, otherwise I’ve got to drink some again. You don’t see that. That’s a bit too much, but yea that’s mine.”

Swedish pro Frida Kinhult reflected on growing past some of her old habits. “I had a lot when I was growing up, it kind of got out of control so I worked with my performance coach on ‘adulting’ a little bit to get out of that, but I still have a few things. I don’t like natural tees, like the wooden colored ones. I try to stick to white or the FSU colored ones. I’ve had all the silly things, but I realized it probably doesnt affect my scorecard too much. Trying to grow up and be smarter than that.”

English pro Charley Hull might have the most superstitions of all, but she’s not ready to spill them. “I have loads of weird superstitions, but if I told you all of them we’d be here all day and you’d think I’m a proper weirdo.”
