Jackson resident frustrated with apartment flooding

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A resident at a Jackson apartment complex said she’s having to deal with the aftermath of excessive flooding in her unit.

Cynthia Winford has lived at Waverly Park Apartments for three years. She’s had to temporarily live with other family members due to the unfit living conditions in her own unit. Winford said ongoing plumbing issues in her two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment have caused flooding.

“Both bathrooms, flood out or whatever. You can’t really, we can’t really get in the shower or use the toilet or whatever. The water comes from up on the bottom of the toilets and floods out the bedroom, and it’s been going on for like like going on two months now,” Winford said.

When contractors are called to address the matter, Winford said they perform temporary patch work that only lasts for a few weeks. After the water is drained from the apartment, she’s left with the damage and foul odors.

“They have moved everything up here, and they will come suck the water out of the carpet, last time no new carpet was put down. I don’t think that’s right either, no new carpet was put down, and all of our stuff is just up front. But still, we really can’t, how are we supposed to stay here?” Winford questioned.

She said a drain in the parking lot fills with water when it rains, which also finds its way inside of her apartment due to a large opening in the hallway floor. Winford said she’s had to rush her four-month-old grandchild to the hospital after getting sick.

“The fact that the apartment manager or no one tried to accommodate me and my kids, put us in another unit, I’ve tried to be transferred to another unit. They wouldn’t place us in another unit. I don’t think that was right. Me having to go through the application process all over again, this is not my fault, so I don’t think that was right. Like I said, I’ve never been the type of person that wanted to go live on my people, because they have lives themselves, so I shouldn’t have to do that,” she said.

WJTV 12 News reached out to the apartment’s manager, and they declined to talk on camera. However, they said they’re aware of the issues in the unit and are working to get the matter resolved.

WJTV 12 News also reached out to the property owner, but no one answered when contacted.
