May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” is the a Texas campaign to remind drivers to stay alert and protect motorcycle riders on the road.
Motorcycles’ smaller size makes them harder to see and means they provide less protection from impacts. In 2024, there were 9,016 motorcycle crashes, killing 585 and seriously injuring over 2,500 motorcyclists in Texas.
With temperatures warming, motorcyclists are returning to the road. TxDOT is reminding drivers to be extra careful when around motorcycles. Minor collisions in another vehicle can be catastrophic on a motorcycle.
TXDOT is reminding all drivers to take precautions to keep the roads safe. Check mirrors more often to keep riders from “coming out of nowhere.” Signal earlier and for longer to provide riders and other drivers the chance to react in a timely manner. Don’t tailgate. Motorcycles can slow down by downshifting, which doesn’t activate their brake lights. Slow down. If a crash does happen, speed makes it more deadly.
“Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” is part of TxDOT’s “Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative.”
