Tascam Releases DR-10L Pro V2.0 Firmware Update

Tascam announcd the V2.0 firmware update for the company’s DR-10L Pro Ultra-Compact 32-bit Float Audio Field Recorder with lavalier mic. Key to this update, the company says, is the ability of the DR-10L Pro to accept LTC (Linear Timecode) Jam Sync and take advantage of the capabilities provided by such action. Jam Sync is the industry term for “jamming” timecode into a device so that one can link their recorder with various timecode generators.

The new V2.0 firmware update enables timecode generators to jam sync to the DR-10L Pro using LTC Jam Sync. This is accomplished by connecting the output of a timecode generator to the DR-10L Pro via a 3.5mm stereo mini cable. Before recording has begun, the operator must attach a 3.5mm stereo mini cable to the TC generator’s TC output port. Next, the lavalier mic from the DR-10L Pro must be disconnected, after which the 3.5mm stereo mini cable for the TC generator is connected to the DR-10L Pro in its place.

Once LTC has been synchronized to the DR-10L Pro, the operator simply unplugs the cable and reattaches the TM-10L lavalier microphone to the DR-10L Pro to start recording. A setting titled “LTC SYNC” has been added to the DR-10L Pro menu. This is how the operator accesses this new feature.

Tascam says it is important to note that there is no limit to the number of DR-10L Pros that can be connected for LTC sync. “This is beneficial because, as the DR-10L Pro is one of the industry’s standard recording devices, production houses, freelancers, independent filmmakers, and others who tend to have more than one DR-10L Pro at their disposal can use multiple units on their project all while seamlessly syncing timecode.”

After the recorded video and audio files have been imported into the user’s preferred video editing software, the timecode can be used to align the files with great ease. “This dramatically saves time, which is frequently the most valuable commodity an editor has.”

Tascam Product Specialist Sean Daily says: “Previously, the only way to sync any sort of timecode with the Tascam DR-10L Pro was by using the AK-BT1 Bluetooth dongle, which is only compatible with Atomos UltraSync Blue products. By enabling the DR-10L Pro to interface with various timecode devices via this update and existing input, the DR-10L Pro is far more accessible to filmmakers, content creators, and others.”
