A $10,000 Woodward grant was used to purchase 64 mattresses for the Mission’s Women and Children’s Crisis Center, while a donation from Meijer supplied 200 new pillows.
Additional donations were made to buy new sheets and pillowcases.
Workers at the Rescue Mission said the previous mattresses were over 10 years old, and the Mission is nearly at capacity each night.
“We’re seeing more financial instability, more reported instances of domestic violence, as well as more reported instances of mental and medical concerns. Mental health concerns, that is. And so with that, there’s always a need. And our door is always open,” said homeless services director Kurt Pazdra.
Each night, the Rockford Rescue Mission provides shelter to around 130 people, nearly 1,500 a year.
