UMC nurses push for safety, better pay, and working conditions on the picket lines

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — For the third time in a year, nurses at the University Medical Center in New Orleans went on strike as negotiations with LCMC Health continue.

Nurses and community members say the rally is a call for safer working conditions.
They claim that they’re understaffed, underpaid and add LCMC spent over $5 million over the last year on temporary replacement nurses during labor strikes.

Nurses are also calling for LCMC to sign on to the Workers’ Bill of Rights.

“We’re just not satisfied with the progress we’re making thus far. And so that’s how we call it a third strike. I feel thankful and empowered by the turnout we’ve had thus far, the energy we’re feeling today in spite of the weather. I just feel so thankful for everyone that’s out here supporting us. I would like UMC to come to the table with the intention of reaching a fair contract,” said neurosurgery nurse practitioner Lauren Waddell.
