SEYMOUR, Ind. — April 30, 2025
An 18-year-old Seymour man is in custody after allegedly opening fire inside the Jackson County Public Library Wednesday, injuring a library employee and prompting a multi-agency law enforcement response.
According to the Indiana State Police, Emiliano Cuevas-Bravo entered the front entrance of the library shortly before noon armed with a long gun. Authorities say he fired a single shot toward two employees near the entrance, striking one person, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
After the initial shot, Cuevas-Bravo reportedly walked to the second floor of the library and placed the weapon on the ground. A quick-thinking library patron then tackled and restrained him until police arrived. Officers from the Seymour Police Department were first on scene and took Cuevas-Bravo into custody. Indiana State Police, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Excise Police, and agents from the FBI’s Indianapolis Field Office also responded to the incident.
Investigators later determined that earlier in the day, Cuevas-Bravo had gone to Seymour High School with the intention of targeting a Seymour Police Department School Resource Officer. He never entered the school or encountered the officer and instead proceeded to the library, police said.
Cuevas-Bravo was booked into the Jackson County Jail on preliminary charges of two counts of attempted murder, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and intimidation. He is expected to appear in Jackson County Circuit Court for an initial hearing.
Emergency crews from Jackson County EMS and the Seymour Fire Department also responded to the scene. Police remained at the library throughout the afternoon as the investigation continued.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and noted that, under the law, all charges are accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
An arrest photo of Cuevas-Bravo was released by Indiana State Police.
