Barges hit Mississippi River bridge in Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – Two barges hit the Mississippi River bridge in Vicksburg.

The incident occurred on Thursday, May 1. The barges could be seen on a Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) camera.

Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer said it appears that two barges broke loose from a Ricky Hughes vessel. He said the two barges were not carrying any hazmat materials.

No injuries have been reported.

The Mississippi River is currently experiencing high water levels due to flooding. The river crested above flood stage on Monday, April 28 in Vicksburg.
