Salt Lake Temple renovation update: new statues, hand-painted ceilings

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released an update on the renovations underway at Temple Square and inside the Salt Lake Temple.

The Salt Lake Temple closed in December 2019 and has been undergoing renovations to replace historic plumbing and electrical systems as well as complete a seismic upgrade to protect it from large earthquakes.

Two statues have recently been placed on the grounds of Temple Square. “The Five Wise Virgins” statue was installed west of the Relief Society Building. An event was held earlier this month, on April 2.

The other statue is “Joseph Smith Receives the Plates,” which was created by Leroy Transfield. It was placed near the Seagull monument in the Southwest corner. This corner reopened to the public in February of this year.

Inside the Salt Lake Temple, restoration is underway for the delicate details located in the structure. The Church says workers have been hand-painting ceilings and restoring gilded molding to “enhance the aesthetic appeal of the interior while also respecting the temple’s original design.”

According to the Church, crews have also been working on “restoring and replicating the ornate wood paneling, beams, and stenciling for which the temple is known.” This process involves repairs, stenciling designs, and reapplying gold leaf to these old wooden elements.

The Church shared photos of the hand-painted ceiling in the celestial room. Visitors can look closely to see delicately colored florals and grapes.

Although the temple itself remains closed, parts of Temple Square are open to the public, with events, exhibits, and organ recitals available for visitors. The “International Art Competition” exhibition is currently free to visit at the Church History Museum.

The Salt Lake Temple is expected to be completed in 2027. The Church is planning to hold tours between April and October 2027.
