BATON ROUGE, La. (
Louisiana First) — A blues icon and
8-time Grammy winner from Louisiana, Buddy Guy,
made a cameo in the post-credits scene of “Sinners”, the new film by Ryan Coogler.
The movie stars Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld. It is set in 1930s Mississippi and blends horror, music, and social commentary. Jordan plays twin brothers Smoke and Stack. They return home to open a juke joint but face supernatural forces.
Their cousin Sammie, a talented guitarist played by Miles Caton, is key to the story. It builds to a dramatic confrontation with vampires and racial tensions.
In the mid-credits scene, there’s a jump to 1992. Buddy Guy appears as an older Sammie. In the scene, Stack and Mary (Steinfeld), now vampires, return and offer Sammie immortality. He declines and plays a song he performed when he was young.
“I saw a little clip of the movie and said, ‘Wow, this may help the blues stay alive, ‘” Guy told the New York Times.
“Sinners” was filmed in parts of Louisiana, including Donaldsonville, New Orleans, Belle Chasse, St. Bernard, Braithwaite, Tickfaw, Hammond, Napoleonville, and Thibodaux. It was released on April 18.
At 88, Guy is set to embark on his “Damn Right Encore” tour, with upcoming performances including:
- May 6 – Irving, TX – The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory
- May 8-9 – Austin, TX – Moody Amphitheater
- May 10 – The Woodlands, TX – Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
