COPA investigating CPD officer-involved shooting that led to high-speed chase through south suburbs

CHICAGO (WGN) — New details have emerged concerning the involvement of two people wanted in connection with an officer-involved shooting in Chicago and a subsequent high-speed chase Monday afternoon through the south suburbs.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) says their active investigation is ongoing, stemming from the shooting incident that began near the 3700 block of W. 67^th Place. 

According to COPA’s findings from the early stages of their investigation, the incident reportedly began when an off-duty Chicago police officer encountered armed individuals breaking into vehicles on the street.

COPA said an exchange of gunfire eventually ensued between the off-duty officer and at least one of the individuals. COPA added that the officer sustained a minor injury and received treatment at a nearby hospital.

COPA said the two suspects were unharmed.

The armed suspects fled the scene, eventually leading police on a high-speed chase, as SkyCam9 flew above. Riverdale Police Department spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with an “officer-involved shooting of some sort” in Chicago. Officers then pursued the suspect vehicle through Chicago and back down Interstate-94 into Glenwood.

SkyCam9 captured the moment both suspects fled the vehicle and attempted to evade police. The effort proved unsuccessful, however, as SkyCam9 captured the arrest of one suspect. Police later confirmed that a second suspect was also in custody.

As is standard, COPA will release video related to the incident within 60 days.
