University of Alabama faces lawsuit after scholarship for Black students challenged as discriminatory

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The University of Alabama is facing a civil lawsuit from a national organization, which is accusing a scholarship for African American students for being discriminatory.

The Equal Protection Project, which is a national organization claiming that it opposes race-based affirmative action initiatives, is the group accusing the university that its Norton-Textra Endowed Scholarship for Minority Students in English is discriminatory.

The group filed the suit with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights last week. As of Saturday, the scholarship only lists enrollment and GPA requirements for the award.
