Those who serve in law enforcement never know what the day may hold – and not knowing what tragedy may unfold. The Henderson Police Department is doing what it can to help its officers to combat the stress that may build up.
“They have a very stressful job,” says Pastor Mike Spivey. “They’re one of the most highest divorce rates and highest suicide rates.”
The department is partnering with Pastors Mike Spivey and Greg Shannon to help mentor officers and be there for the community of Henderson.
Pastor Shannon says this volunteer position is like God opening another door.
“Be a sounding board and encourage them and you know the officers face lots of difficult things that most of us will never have to face,” says Pastor Greg Shannon. “So we just want to be there to be a support and encouragement to them and to be help be a voice in the community too.”
Whether it’s sharing a meal or talking through difficult problems in an officer’s life, Pastor Spivey says the most important role of being a chaplain is being available.
“It’s their kind of consultant and they’re kind of mentor. Somebody can help disciple them,” says Pastor Spivey. “It really is somebody that could be a confidential person. They can talk to you about their problems, not just on the police force and the stress of that carries, but also with just every day life. They have problems with marriages, if they need help in relationships, some of the stress of mental fatigue.”
