Rowan County Schools said the district respects its students’ right to speak up for what’s important to them.
This morning, a group of students participated in a peaceful walkout to express their views on an issue important to them. We respect our students’ right to free speech and civic engagement, and we recognize their desire to make their voices heard.
The walkout was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner. School staff were present throughout to ensure all students remained safe and supervised during the event.
As a nation and a school community, we take pride in upholding the values of free expression and civil discourse. We are committed to supporting our students as they learn to engage with the world around them in thoughtful and constructive ways.
We appreciate the cooperation of our students and staff in ensuring the event proceeded safely and respectfully.

Participants said the walkout was in protest of Mann, who’s been named in a lawsuit for his alleged failure to report his coworker, Coach Andrew Zaheri’s, inappropriate conduct with a student.
Zaheri was convicted of multiple child sex crimes, including rape and sodomy, in 2024. The victim filed a lawsuit in May 2023 claiming the school district and its employees, including Mann, failed to protect them.
The litigation is active as of April 22, and details of the case continue to come to light. On April 25, a petition for Mann’s termination emerged.
“From his accusations of involvement with a previous predatory school coach, Andrew Zaheri, who is now imprisoned, to alleged disgusting comments about a fellow teacher, Jordan Mann is a [sic] menace to the safety and well-being of students attending Rowan County Senior High School,” the petition reads. “Allowing future employment of him would only further endanger and bring fear to innocent young lives.”
Zaheri was terminated following his arrest in 2023, court documents note.
