DRUMS – A motorcyclist was flown after police say he struck a school bus north of Hazleton.
Butler Township Police in Luzerne County are investigating the crash they said happened around 2:20pm Monday at North Hunter Highway and Corporate Drive.
According to police, Hunter M. Ferst, 22, of Drums, was headed south on Hunter Highway when he struck the right rear portion of a school bus that was turning left onto Corporate Drive.
The bus is owned by Rohrer Bus, who provides transportation for the Hazleton Area School District. The bus was driven by Michelle K. Planutis, 56, of Hazleton Township.
Ferst was wearing a helmet and sustained serious injuries. He was flown to a Wilkes-Barre hospital for treatment.
Police said 27 students were aboard the bus along with two adult staff members and a driver and the bus was picking up students for an out-of-town sporting event.
Students were taken to the Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences where they were evaluated and alternate transportation was arranged.
Both the school district and Rohrer Bus are cooperating, police said.
