Meta launches standalone AI app to compete with ChatGPT

(KRON) — Facebook parent company Meta, Inc. has launched a new standalone AI app in an apparent bid to compete with artificial intelligence market leaders like ChatGPT. In an announcement Tuesday, the company said it was launching the first version of the Meta AI app, “the assistant that gets to know your preferences, remembers context and is personalized to you.”

Meta’s AI app will be powered by Llama 4, the company’s latest large language model. The app differs from Meta’s previous forays into AI in that it will exist outside of its existing platforms, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger.

Meta says its AI app is “built to get to know you, so its answers are more helpful.” It’s also designed to be easy to talk to, “so it’s more seamless and natural to interact with.”

The app will feature a discover feed and will be the new companion app for Meta’s AI glasses.

Meta said its AI app will also leverage information from your existing profiles and feeds on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to deliver more relevant answers to your questions.

The new app is Meta’s first foray into the kind of standalone AI platforms launched by competitors like OpenAI and Google.

Meta is hosting its inaugural AI developer conference on Tuesday. The event, which it is calling LlamaCon, is a one-day event focused on its Llama family of AI language models and tools.

Meta is headquartered in Menlo Park.
