Nearly a month after an area man’s name was added to the Arkansas Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial, he is going to be recognized on a national level this weekend. Former Harrison firefighter Jim McCammon will be among 140 firefighters honored during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend Saturday and Sunday in Emmitsburg, Md.

McCammon was placed on the Arkansas memorial on March 29 in Little Rock, nearly six years after his death. According to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, McCammon served on and off in the Harrison Fire Department for over 30 years and was the city’s first fire inspector. He retired as a captain at the end of January 2007. McCammon’s awards include the Fire Safety Commendation Medal and the Arkansas Fire Marshal’s Association Lifetime Member for Outstanding Service. In 2019, the Harrison Fire Department’s training tower was named in his honor.

McCammon developed kidney cancer in 2012, liver cancer in 2016 and lung cancer in 2018. He died May 12, 2019, at the age of 64. In an interview shortly before his death, McCammon told KYTV he believed the cancer was linked to his profession.

Events begin Saturday evening at 6:30 with the National Fallen Firefighters Candlelight Service hosted by St. Louis Fire Department Captain Garon Mosby. The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service will be Sunday morning at 9, and actor Jeremy Holm will serve as the host. Both events will be streamed at firehero.org and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s YouTube channel and Facebook.
